Broadway Loses Cars, Gets Wider

Traffic-choked Times Square has been turned into an auto-free pedestrian plaza, thanks to Mayor Bloomie’s recent plan to ease traffic congestion by closing Broadway to vehicles at the so-called Crossroads of the World. With the addition of several hundred cheap lawn chairs on the now-vacant pavement, the area has been fully transformed into a tourist-packed plaza that’s getting some mixed reviews. “It’s terribly ugly,” says a librarian from the Bronx. But that’s what Times Square is about –ugly and in your face.” Check out some pics of the carnage here.
