Babes, They Were Born To Run
It’s about fucking time The Runaways get their close up. The iconic teenage girl group got its start in the Los Angeles club scene in back in ’75, busting out a gritty, sexy and succulent version of glammed-out punk rock. Their self-titled debut dropped in 1976 with the single “Cherry Bomb” — the beginning of a string of hits that included “Queens of Noise” and “Born to Be Bad.” The Runaways always influenced countless girl rockers and riot-grrrls before splitting in ’79 as Lita Ford, Joan Jett and others went on to pursue solo careers.
The big screen bio-pic adaption, appropriately title The Runaways, is toplined by Dakota Fanning (reveling in her role as jail-bait lead singer Cherrie Curie) and Twilight star Kristen Thomas (rocking jet-black hair as Jett). “It was weird,” Jett says of Thomas playing herself in the flick. “I feel like she got it as right as you can get it. I don’t know what else she could’ve done.”
The Runaways recently premiered at Sundance and opens in theaters Friday. Check out a trailer here:
