After years of ups and downs and thrills and spills, NYC skating legend Andy Kessler has died tragically at the age of 48 after — of all random fucking things — suffering a heart attack following an allergic reaction to a wasp sting. When it comes to skateboarders in Gotham city, it doesn’t get much bigger than Kessler, who first broke onto the scene in the ’70s as a member of a loose collective of skateboarders and graffiti artists known as Soul Artists of Zoo York and went on to singlehandedly transform the sport. “He as probably been skating longer than anyone else in the city,” reads a post on the Zoo York site. “Our thoughts go out to his family and friends; the city won’t be the same without you.” For a real taste on Andy’s influence on the skating community in NYC and beyond, check out the utterly fantastic documentary Death Bowl to Downtown.
