Discovered live off the coast of New Jersey (no surprise here), a parasite has been found to burrow into a fish’s gills, slowly devour its tongue, and then continues living inside the mouth. Other than the loss of its oral organ, the fish does not appear to be harmed or altered in any other way. Described as “Really quite large, really quite hideous [with] dozens of really sharp, nasty claws underneath” the louse parasite is not a threat to humans, so don’t be worried about going for a dip when warm weather rolls around although if you happen to catch one it could deliver a painful bite.
